Chick-Fil-A Bowl?
Tell me they’re kidding.
Nope, they’re not kidding. We witnessed, against our better judgement, this latest commercial perversion of collegiate sports on the ubiquitous flat-screen-TV-behind-the-bar when we stopped into The Cultured Pelican for a glass of champagne at the end of our Old Years Day evening.
What’s next? The Spam® Bowl? What happened to the dignified bowl games of our youth – The Orange Bowl, The Sugar Bowl, The Tournament of Roses?
This is one of the reasons we don’t have television. I cringe at the thought of waking up this New Year’s morning and turning on the tube to see a parade of garish floats decorated entirely in canned meat product.

You draw the line at single sponsors and prefer multiple sponsors. There is not an electron fired on a TV that is free. Not even public TV.
I too like the nostalgia of the Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl, ….The Orange Bowl and Gator Bowl are Johnny come lately to me.
We have the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, used to be The Continental Tire Bowl. Both are played in The Bank of America Stadium, formerly Ericsson Stadium.
It is located in Charlotte near Time Warner Cable arena just a few miles away from Lowes Motor Speedway.

We did not get to meet the Carters last night. We were of the few not invited to the “official party”. But that’s okay. He’s still around.
