The triathlon cometh….
That means the multitude of potholes in our roads have been getting patched. There will soon be hundreds of hard bodies on gazillion dollar bikes zooming by like fighter jets.
I just hope nobody gets killed this year. One of the main triathlon roads has been getting eaten away by the huge dump trucks taking dirt and rocks from the hill they are steadily demolishing for the ridiculous and long-awaited (by few) Christiansted by-pass. If they don’t pave it soon, there will be deaths. And I see no sign that it will be paved.
Oh, but today one of the huge dump trucks careened down the hill from the project, ran over a pick-up truck and hit a house while taking out electrical lines. And the highway crew is painting lines on another road. How helpful for those bikers whose lives are at stake on the major route. Aaah, paradise!

Hey Terry, isn’t that why they just got done paving Great Pond right connecting the north to the south…I assumed they had done that so they did not have to send the bikers down the bombed out Lowry Hill rd.

Well, they’ve always used both Lowry Hill and Sight hill.
The course would have to be drastically changed and there might be accidents during the race if all the bike traffic were diverted to just one of those two roads.
It’s already very dangerous at the intersection of Sight and 624.

lol now be nice about the bypass, stx is growing and we need it,i spent 2 months on STT and i got road rage daily and came home, just remember the needs of the many outweigh the needs of a few and it’s more than a “few” people who need and want that bypass. just be thankfull it’s a stateside contractor doing the work and not locals, STX is changing and we need to accept that fact, the old days are done with.

Have you heard that the money will be running out soon and they won’t be able to finish it?

well like everything else on this island,i will believe it when i see it. I heard today that the foundation had been poured for the stanford project, and these triathletes ride their bikes like our cabdrivers drive their vans, right down the middle lol,one of them told me that a bunch of them were running up the beast tomorrow at 5pm

Terry- given that summer rains and potential storms are a few months away. what are the chances that this huge, dirt crevasse will be paved before the giant deluge of sludge, silt and everything else will create a run- off that can’t be stopped.
Not a question so much as a comment.
Change and progress may be inevitable, however, achieving those goals with planning and forethought would prevent what we can assume is going to happen.
It’s typical that plans are put in place and then either the money or the supplies run out.
Just look at the multi million dollar little bridge at Mon Bijou- The Little Bridge That Couldn’t!!
This project should have been finished 4 years ago and it’s sitting there about 80 % finished and no one has worked on it for weeks or even months!
I understand your position very well.
I think we’re all eager to see smart development ( oxymoron?) but as the carpenters’ rule goes: measure twice, cut once!

Oh Bonnie, the little bridge in mon bijou is still young, give it a few years. In St. Thomas there is a bridge-to-nowhere near Bovoni that’s been there for over ten years, maybe 15. At least the one here has road leading up to both sides! The Bovoni one spans a section of gut, far removed from any roads.

We talked about the hillside coming down into the streets of C’sted and then into the harbor years ago, Bonnie. But, as is typical of the agencies involved, they have been in denial.
I can just picture the looks on peoples faces when it happens (think Homer Simpson - doh!)
And the agencies can’t even properly maintain the roads we already have….(I’m banging my head against the wall…)
I love it! “The Little Bridge That Couldn’t” - perfect! What is the story with that thing, anyway?

Friday early morning update. Yesterday the “Free Speech” radio show had callers saying that there was paving happening in front of Pearl B Larsen School. With equipment in the area one can hope that Lowrey Hill Rd, especially just south of Tide Village, was being taken care of next. Spring Gut road is newly graded and rumor has it that the trucks will be using it to get to South Shore.
Speaking of trucks; I did not hear any or see any when out on the Catherine’s Rest roads yesterday at all! There was an announcement Weds aft on the Al Gee radio news that there was going to be a meeting with Public Works, the Police and the contractors yesterday. Were they all there or could they have stopped them for the weekend?
The trucks started out driving very dangerously, my first encounter was one NOT stopping for the Stop sign where I had the right of way turning up “Religion Row”
hmmm, maybe another time for the By-Pass…

Saturday morning news. Tom Guthrie, Triathlon Top Guy, told me that the trucks are stopped until after the Triathlon. There is lots of paving done and more was underway. The newspapers quoted Public Works Commish “…the new truck route is Spring Gut”
and C’sted was thronged with Triathletes! So maybe this year will be safe again.

Hey Lisa, Thanks for the updates. Amazingly, they did a great job paving Lowry Hill Road and the area in front of Pearl B. (and the Pickled Greek)!
“Religion Row”….Is that Herman Hill?
Can’t wait to see what Spring Gut Rd. looks like now!
