Ugh!

Well, the new place at the corner where the South Shore Cafe and most recently, Kaleidoscope used to be, is (ugh!) a Santo Domingan-type “bar & rest.” Called El Azuano and opened last week-end with blaring music well into the wee hours.

I did call the police, but nothing happened. The music went on until the tylenol pm kicked in. Ugh!

Michael promised to go over to try and ask the people to keep it down in our nice quiet residential neighborhood, and today, on our way back from doing errands, we did stop by. We asked to see their business license. It does not say “night club”, only tavern, restaurant and tobacco retailer. We asked them to keep the volume down. They looked at us like we have twelve heads.

It’s pretty quiet there tonight. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. Hope I don’t have to call 911 again. Although that would be a fun blog post I’m sure. Hahahaha, they probably won’t be answering with halloween and all…..

One would think you might be open to cultural diversity or at least seize an opportunity for a teachable moment with rolled up sleeves, peanuts and beer in the mango grove.

I have to give you and Michale credit. You do try and talk reason before taking action.

Hopefully the first night was just friends in celebration of the opening and they will add to the community with good food.

Hopefully this operation is not named after the riotous Dominican
    Republic Carnival Azuano……http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=http://azuacultural.blogspot.com/2009/04/cultura.html&ei=QS_sSpL9C8GXtgfkpN06&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=7&ved=0CCkQ7gEwBg&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%2522carnaval%2Bazuano%2522%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dgm%26sourceid%3Dgmail%26sa%3DN

One of the unforgetable things from our 6 weeks in Luperon (a small rural town with a good harbor) in the DR was the allmost constant blaring merengue — even in the dentist’s office! The only thing you could hear above it was the sound of hundreds of unmufffled motorbikes. But the people were always happy and full of energy and excitement. Good luck!

Do you really call 911 for noise? Or did you just mean calling the police? Anyway, I do know what it is like to be bothered by loud music on St. Croix because I have stayed at Sandcastle on the Beach many times & Sunday is often a huge party day (and then night, and then morning…). Hopefully this doesn’t happen to your neighborhood.

  6. Terry Says:

Yes, Guy, I called 911 for noise. If you call the police stations, they usually just tell you to call 911. That is, if they even answer the phone at the police station at all.

  7. Michael Says:

Wreg – we are open to and do enjoy cultural diversity. Though we’ve never had peanuts and beer in the mango grove, we have shared octopus salad and land crab paella under the beach mahoes with some of our Puerto Rican neighbors. And we’ve frequented the ‘Santos’ bars in town with Peter after many a Jump-Up.

We’ve supported the two previous restaurants at this location and we’ll support this one too. We just ask that they be respectful of our quiet neighborhood when it gets late.

We came by that corner after going to Point Udall for the “Crime Free” gathering. Commissioner Frances and Melody came for awhile. Carol from the Source was there.

The plucking guitar was well-amplified. Hope they are more a rest. than something else it could be.
Think the VIPD got the deciibel meters yet?

  9. Guy Vierra Says:

Wow. Much different from where I live (California). If I called 911 for noise, I would be in trouble.

  10. Nikki Says:

Oh, that totally sucks! Does the “church of the bad guitar” still keep you awake on occasion too?

  11. Terry Says:

The “church of the bad guitar” only keeps us awake when we go to bed REALLY early. Services are on Sundays, late morning/early afternoon and Wednesday and Friday evenings between 8 and 9pm. And it’s on the other side of the house, so it’s not outrageously loud (just mildly amusing, and a nice cultural neighborhood quirk. As opposed to something that sounds like it’s going to blast us out of bed…..).

Peace and quiet can often be taken for granted, but boy, oh, boy, when you lose it, it is so apparent and annoying. Good luck dealing with that, your approach is reasonable, being polite and asking nicely. Do you get neighborhood support or are you going it alone?

  13. Dan Says:

Could you please post a picture of you with twelve heads. I’d love to see it!

  14. TerryC Says:

Actually, Trudi, we haven’t asked for help yet. But if it keeps up, we have one neighbor who might help.

Sorry, Dan, don’t have time to diddle on the computer ;-) …….

  15. Dan Says:

I did Google research, and this is the closest I could come to 12 heads:

And this is the closest I could come to none:

  16. Lisa Says:

    maybe the pet heads?

    Goliath in his latest costume?

don’t forget to update this situation

and did you see the moon come up recently?

  17. Terry Says:

    Cute, Dan! We love garlic!

Goliath has not had time for costumes recently, Lisa.
Situation will be updated when I get finished with this comment.
Ah, yes, the moon has been spectacular!
See you on CCT opening night!
