Who We Are

Hi, my name’s Michael and I’m a warmth-a-holic. I moved to St. Croix from St. Thomas more than six years ago and I don’t have any plans to leave. Born in California, I moved steadily North-Eastward, in my mis-guided youth, to increasingly colder climates. In 1996, a turn of events reversed my migration and I made it as far back as Utah. I kept thinking, if I could just find a place where its 80 degrees every day and 65 every night, I’d be home, and here I am! St. Croix doesn’t meet these criteria exactly, but close enough for me.

My wife Terry has been coming down here since the eighties. She bought a cute little house just before Hurricane Hugo blew it away, leaving a concrete slab and a toilet! That delayed the move, but she finally landed permanently in 1994. When we started seeing each other, she hadn’t left island in five years.

We love it here and there’s no place else we’d call home. Like anywhere, it has its ups and downs, but when you live in paradise, the downs are easy to overlook. We share our little piece of eden with 12 11 dogs, 7 …oops there goes another one… 4 or so cats, a lot of plants, and an island full of people we call family.

You have a great website and it helps me keep up w/ STX. Its easy reading and reminds me of life on St.Croix. My family goes back to the 1800 on STX. We are related to the Merwins, Armstrongs, Skeocks, Lewetz, Nelrops through marriges over the years. My cousin Paul runs the family business ” Cottages by the Sea” in F,sted. We come down 3-4 times a year ad was there for Hugo. We brought 11 carpenters down to rebuild the Cottages and stayed there for 5 years. Thoes of us who remember Hugo wont forget. We have a Millwork company(woodworking) in Florida but have plenty of family and liniage is STX. We will be @ Cottages for Labor day weekend after we spend 4 days in the BVI’s touring all the islands by rental boat, then come to STX to play golf.(not much of a golfer. Better cowboy than glofer) We have a ranch in central Florida where we raise longhorn cattle and compete in Rodeo sports.
Keep up the intresting column, Wayne Benedict

Great blog. I’m always looking for local feedback and was happy to find a mention of our conflict with the Senators here in the Virgin Islands. It’s still going on as we approach the “one-year-mark” since the passing of Act 6905 that brought about the recall effort.

Thanks for listening and mentioning Free Speech!

Alot of love stories are related to the Love Island St. Croix and I think we all have one to share. I found out this job website http://www.career.vi that shows the Jobs in the Virgin Islands for those who would love to be the part of the Caribbean. But like this job website career.vi, a lot of things are improving on the islands. Lets hope it keeps progressing. Keep the good work going!

Thank you for doing this blog. When I’m off-island it’s fun to read. We also have a little website at http://www.cruzana.com so if you get a chance come on over. We focus mostly on St. Croix real estate and other good things. What part of the island do you live on? We are over on the North Shore of St. Croix, Cane Bay area.
